Fosamax and Your Jaw

When studies reporting the efficiency of drugs are correctly reported, most drugs have limited benefit – and side effects outweigh these " benefits " in many cases. This is cetainly true in the case of Fosamax. Research claims this drug reduces the incidence of fractures by 50 %.

What does this really mean? 2% of the controls and 1% of the Fosamax group had fractures – a difference of 50%, but not a reduction of risk of 50%. The actual risk reduction is only 2.7%

Now there are reports of osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with the use of Fosamax and related drugs. Although mainly seen in patients getting IV medication, Merck & Co. reports up to 200 cases in people taking the usual oral dose, according to the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs. Since drug companies are said to notoriously underreport problems, we wonder if the number could be higher.

According to Dr. D. Kase, " Symptoms of osteonecrosis can mimic other common problems associated with simpler sources, such as periodontal disease or an endodontically involved tooth… The theory is that this class of medication inhibits new vessel formation; thus interferes with new bone formation. " He quotes the American Dental Association Council as saying : " Biophosphonates may carry the potential for severe suppression of bone turnover that may impair some of the reparative properties of bone. "

We feel there’s no justification for using something like Fosamax when there are far more effective and healthful ways to support bone health.
